how I spent my summer / back in the studio

Aug 19 09

I spent most of the summer lying low, doing normal people stuf: eating, bikeriding, going to the beach, visiting friends, road trips, books, swimming in pools, barbecues and so on. I did a lot of nonmusical things.

One personal non-musical achievement I was quite proud of was copyrighting my novel back in July. It was a symbolic moment. It meant that I was finally finished with the damn thing. I first began it in 2006 and it took me a while to realize what I was doing and what I was writing and after years of fiddling, I am finally ready to let go and share it. I just started sending it out and the response has been great so far. But waiting is something I've never been good at.

So, I started from scratch again. While I figure out how to get my first book released, I went ahead and started another one. I am nothing if not restless and writing is a great big project to focus on. I like the act of sitting down with a cup of coffee each morning and trying to fulfill my goal of 1,000 words a day. Learned that from Michael Chabon. It's a good tangible milemarker.

The second one, as it turns out, is a lot easier than the first, because now I know what I'm doing. And yet, it's harder in some ways, because I know what I'm doing. Still, I like the challenge and I am now addicted to the act of writing fiction. I really like the problem solving aspect of it. About a third of the way through my first draft. No title yet.

And now, as summer is ending, I've entered the recording studio to begin a new album. This time I am not coming to the table with a set plan. Normally, I'll already have the songs selected and I'll know what I want to say. This time I'm leaving it to chance. I have a few songs that I'd like to record but mostly I'll be writing on the fly in the studio.

I'll be posting videos from the studio at YouTube.com/valemmich and will write some updates at Twitter.com/valemmich.

That's all for now.
Val
