Spring

Apr 17 07

I can't believe how long it's been since the last time I posted something here. I'm sorry for that. Those of you who frequent MySpace know that's where most of the action takes place but I shouldn't neglect those who choose not to participate there (b/c that's probably a good thing).

A lot happening. I'm about to release the first volume of what will be an ongoing b-sides and rarities series called SONGS. The first album is called Songs, Volume 1: Woodstock and will be available May 1. It features songs that the band and I (and Mr. Cupp) recorded in the house in Woodstock while writing and preparing Sunlight Searchparty. It's a much poppier record than Sunlight. The songs are tighter and shorter and vary in subject matter from quite depressing to very very silly and playful. It was a really fun time for me, just writing whatever came to my mind. In retrospect, it seems that these songs were probably transitional songs, taking me away from what I was previously doing for my last album and what I was being asked to do by the powers that be (namely catchy and radio-friendly) to songs that are have more depth i think and are harder to boil down to such simple terms. For Sunlight Searchparty, I tried to pick the songs with the most weight. I guess the songs on Woodstock are lighter in some way, at least in my mind. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it.

In a week from tomorrow, my band and I will be hitting the road for our first tour in over a year. We're very eager to get out there and are looking forward to seeing some of you again. We hope that this will be the first of many short regional tour stints this year. One of the disadvantages of being without a record label (and i'm realizing that there aren't many nowadays) is financial support for touring. However, I hope that over time we can overcome that with the help of all of you. If everytime we come to play for you, you come to see us, then we'll be invited back and we can build it up from there. It's pretty simple really. It just takes time and since we're in this for the long haul, we have all the time in the world. So, if you like our music and you live in or close to the city we're playing in, please come and support. It would mean a lot to us.

What else? I've been spending a lot of my time on another project which has nothing to do with music. It's a bit too early to reveal for fear that I somehow become what I sing about (the boy who cried wolf) but nonetheless I mention it because I'm spending all my free time away from music on it and I hope that it could possibly be the next phase of my career. Vague enough? Just a teaser. More information in the coming months.

In the meantime, I hope to release at least one more b-sides record this year, perhaps in the fall. My goal is to make up for lost time. Just create, release and share as much as I can with you while I'm here on Earth. Keep pushing myself. Am I getting to spiritual here? Perhaps. I'll stop. You would think I've been diagnosed with a terminal illness the way I'm writing. Sometimes I feel like that.

As always, thanks for listening and for paying attention & reading the fine print.

With love,
Val
