For those of you who haven't heard, on Wednesday, April 23, there will be a new song called "Make It Up" on the radio player on this website. I thought I should maybe tell you more about the story behind the song.
It was one of the 14 songs that were recorded during the Slow Down Kid sessions. Thematically, it fit the record perfectly. It's essentially about letting go...making shit up as you go...not worrying about every little itsy bitsy move you make...just living without worrying about what will happen. Its closest relative on the record would be "Slow Down Kid," strictly for its optimism. Both are kind of uplifting songs or least they were meant to be.
The song turned out great. First of all, it's fast paced and it gets you going. Second, it's pure pop. Bopping up and down pop. And the ending...the ending is my favorite part. We were trying to mimic the end of an old Beatles song where everything just kind of gets confused and messy and over-the-top. Just a cacophony of sound like at the end of "A Day In The Life." I was really happy with the way it turned out.
So why not put it on the record? I just thought it was way too happy. I felt like it would have stood out like a sore thumb in the flow of the album. I think it's a good song but I didn't think it had any place on SDK. I wanted the album to be heavy emotionally and "Make It Up" was too light. I don't know if I made the right or wrong decision but I don't care. It felt right at the time and I'm sticking with it.
"Make It Up" is just a fun song that I wanted you all to hear. It makes me laugh for some reason. I don't ever remember being that carefree. I wish I could get back there. It seems like a good place to be.
